Drunken piano smasher gets deferred judgement

MASON CITY – A Des Moines man who got drunk this summer and smashed a piano in downtown Mason city which was painted by kids got slapped in the wallet Monday when he was sentenced in court.

Coltin James Schupbach, age 21 of Des Moines, received a deferred judgement on October 27 on a charge of third degree criminal mischief after an incident in downtown Mason City this past May. Schupbach was arrested by Mason City police for public intoxication and criminal mischief after witnesses pointed him out as the culprit who beat up a community outdoor piano on the downtown plaza. The piano was estimated to be worth $750 and was said to be a total loss after Schupbach got done pummeling it. Judge Patrick Byrne gave Shupbach 2 years of probation and $2,658.03 in fines and fees as part of a deferred judgement, which also included dismissal of the public intoxication charge.

The piano was one of several that local students had refurbished and painted as part of Tunes for the Town or “spontaneous art” that were placed in the downtown area this year.
