Clear Lake woman’s trial set after assault on police officer

CLEAR LAKE – Prosecutors in Cerro Gordo county have cut a break for a Clear Lake woman accused of assaulting a police officer.

Kathryn Jane Schmidt, age 20, came into contact with a Clear Lake police officer on the late evening of September 20, just before midnight. A police officer determined that she was speeding, and issued her a ticket for traveling between 16 to 20 miles per hour too fast in a 55 miles per hour zone. At some point during her interaction with the officer, she interfered with the officer’s activities, and allegedly assaulted the officer.

Schmidt was placed under arrest and charged with interference with official acts and assault on a peace officer.

On October 7, Cerro Gordo prosecutor Steven Tynan amended the charge of assault on a police officer to a charge of simple assault. A trial date was set for March 24, 2015 on all the charges brought against her.
