DAVENPORT – An Iowa man who brutally attacked an elderly woman who later died has been captured after a man-hunt.
Gary Michael Fortune was taken into custody on September 9, 2014 in a Reynolds, Illinois bar. He is being held in the Rock Island County Jail on a charge of murder in the first degree until such time as he is extradited to Scott County Iowa.
As a result of what Davenport police called a “horrific incident”, Betty Simmons, age 61 of Davenport, succumbed to the stab injuries she received on the night of September 8, 2014 and was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for today in Iowa City. Jack Simmons, age 52 of Davenport, has undergone surgery for life threatening wounds he received during the brutal attack and is recovering in a Quad Cities hospital. Fortune is said to have known the victims.
