MASON CITY – The Humane Society of North Iowa recently nominated 9 year old Allison Diekema as their 2013 Volunteer of the Year.

Each year, the organization honors the efforts of a nominated volunteer who has shown commitment, compassion and given care to the animals at the Humane Society of North Iowa’s Mason City shelter.

Allison Diekema, a 4th grader at Roosevelt Elementary, first started volunteering at the shelter more than a year ago. Allison visits on an almost weekly basis to socialize and walk as many of the shelter dogs as she can. Allison loves animals and aspires to be a Veterinarian someday, so volunteering her time at an animal shelter is very worthwhile to her.

“All the dogs are sweet, all the cats are loving,” said Allison. “I miss them when they’ve been adopted and are no longer in the shelter, but it also means there are new animals for me to spend my time with.”

“Allison is a very competent and passionate volunteer,” said Sybil Soukup, Executive Director of the organization. “We appreciate her commitment to helping the animals in our care by volunteering her time to exercise them and keep them social.”

The Humane Society of North Iowa encourages anyone who is interested in volunteering to call the shelter or visit their website for more information.

“We have a wonderful staff here at the shelter,” explained Soukup, “but most of their time is spent feeding, cleaning, and providing direct care to our animals. We definitely rely on volunteers like Allison to come and walk dogs and socialize our cats. Volunteers are very important to us and we appreciate all they do.”

Allison, you’re a peach! We need more young gals (& guys) like you. Thank you!

@JMO-Isn’t it nice that we have some young people volunteering at that age. It gives you some hope for the future.

Absolutely, LVS. I have grandchildren in town and I already see them volunteering for various causes. It makes for good citizens in the future.
