DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz announced today that the Iowa Secretary of State’s office has added another layer of security to help protect Iowa businesses from becoming victims of identity theft.
Corporations and various business entities are required by law to file their paperwork with the Iowa Secretary of State’s office.
The Iowa Secretary of State’s office has now implemented a notification system so a business is contacted when there is an attempt to change the information of the business. This notification alerts the business of the changes so it can protect itself by ensuring the changes are legitimate and not a thief trying to steal the identity of their business in order to secure loans or for other improper motives.
“I personally know what it is like to be the victim of identity theft,” Schultz said. “Often businesses don’t realize that their identity has been stolen until it is too late. That is why we created a system to alert businesses of any changes made to their information with the Secretary of State’s office.”
Schultz regularly visits with community and business leaders across Iowa to hear directly what is working and what isn’t working for Iowa businesses and communities. As Iowa’s Secretary of State, Schultz has focused on cutting red tape for Iowa businesses and connecting them with local resources so they can continue to grow. Businesses are now able to file their forms online with the state of Iowa. Also under Schultz’s leadership, www.sos.iowa.gov now offers a free searchable mechanic’s lien registry to help residential homeowners, subcontractors and banks.
