RAGBRAI 2014 in Mason City

MASON CITY – Mason City has been chosen to serve as an overnight host community for RAGBRAI 2022. The announcement was made Friday, January 28th at the Annual RAGBRAI Announcement Party held in Des Moines. The event takes place the last full week of July which has Mason City hosting the riders overnight on Wednesday, July 27th.

RAGBRAI, The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is an annual bicycle ride across the state of Iowa. This will be its 49th year of RAGBRAI, the oldest, largest and longest bicycle touring event in the world.

“This is very exciting for Mason City and we’re thrilled to welcome over 15,000 guests from all over the country and world to our community,” stated Mayor Bill Schickel. “We are honored to host this grand event and showcase all of the great progress occurring right here in Mason City.”

“This will be a big day for local businesses that will cater to the riders and those who come to our community to take part in the festivities,” said Lindsey James, Executive Director of Visit Mason City. “An estimated $3 million in economic impact was generated by RAGBRAI riders, guests, and visitors during their last overnight stop here in 2014.”

A very successful overnight stop for RAGBRAI was held in Mason City in July 2014 and plans are being made already for another memorable event.

  1. reading the comments on this page are exactly the reason Ragbrai should never come to mason city.
Mason City is a Zero fun town. Everybody here is a victim.
Ragbrai is a fun event with Great people looking to meet other folks and have a good time, and yes, they do bring a boost to the local economy.
Mason City does not deserve to host

    1. I will gladly provide hot showers and a warm bed for any tight bodied young female riders – their parents/guardians can stay elsewhere.

  2. The Casino in Emmetsburg will clean them out before they leave town get to Mason City. What little cash they have left will be spent on cheap beer in Ventura, before they get to the more expensive priced fixed stuff in Clear Lake.

  3. No doubt they’ll enjoy the sight of Vance Jorgensen’s building falling down right in the middle of town. What a proud moment for Mason City. 215 days now.

  4. It is interesting that at least sometimes common sense rules RAGBRAI out. That happened last year when Storm Lake was chosen, but eventually opted out. The decision was made by their local RAGBRAI advisory board, local volunteers, local law enforcement, local health officials, and even their local school board. Reasons cited then were COVID 19,adequate available housing (no one wanted to take in strangers due to Covid) and really interesting was they felt fundraising would be a problem. “Due to continuing econmomic inpacts on everyone in the community, asking for money from anyone at this time is a significant request to make”. Wonder if anyone from the Mason City Chamber even bothered to think about that one?

It really makes one think about what the “true cost” of being an overnight town is.

It might be $3 million but the flip side of things is the constant disruption of normal buisness that day or two. Building supplies not getting to construction sites, auto parts not getting to mechanics, Doctors appointments getting re-scheduled, some buisnesses having to close because nothing gets done during all during RAGBRAI.
Then another thing is getting the city all spiffed up for the crowds. Freshly painted bike lanes, the bike distance signs installed in 2014, many are faded now.
So many challenges to be sure…

  5. 15,000 more opportunities to bring in some new variants! Plus it’s a great way for the city to spend it’s time money and resources for something that’s supposed to be supported by volunteers, yay! See how I made it all sound good? P.S. to all the riders coming to town, make sure you have a good lock. I forget how many bikes were stolen on your last visit to River City.

    1. And if you haven’t had your shots, stay out of town. If you have had your shots, wear a mask while in town. We’re talking a super spreader here.

      1. What jab are you on now? Have you ever had a blood clot? You’re so lucky to have these same Big Pharma giants who make the jabs also market Remdesivir, Eliquis and Xarelto.

        1. Who the f cares. They also make Thioxanthenes, prochlorperazine, chlorpromazine etc. You know the ones in your medicine cabinet. STFU

  6. This ought to be good, you won’t hear about the damage or mess that will have to be cleaned up by the city. Who’s going to be on the receiving end of that 3 million?

  7. Will the new uptown hotel be completed by then? How about the skywalk? can rabgrai sleep in the mall parking lot? Are we having prostitoots shipped in from chicago? Can I special order a blonde white girl?

  8. 178 days away. A lot could happen before then. With 15,000 people from all over the world spending an average of $200 each on a Wednesday night. Prosperity has returned. What could possible go wrong.

    1. It has been more than 10 years since I have gone on RAGBRAI. I spent 20 to 30 dollars per day not per night stop. I have a hard time agreeing that each rider spends 200 dollars each after they stop riding for the day. I might have spent 10 or 15 dollars at most in the town our group was camping in.

          1. Probably by adding gas, food, lodging and other expenditures into the equation. I am sure some people have quite a bill.

  9. I will be driving my vehicle at a high rate of speed whilst hugging tight to the center line. I will also not hesitate to rundown people that ride through stop signs.

    fvck cyclists and fvck jannies

      1. I have ZERO obligation to prevent others from breaking the law (riding through stop signs) or putting their lives in danger (riding across the center line into oncoming traffic) if they die – they die.

  10. Just think of the money it will rake in for a select few. Plus, ample opportunity to pick up their mess after them.
