MASON CITY – A Mason City man who was literally already in hot water made it worse this week when he challenged two jailers to a physical altercation.
According to Sheriff Kevin Pals, inmate Joseph Evenson, age 24, was charged with two counts of assault on correctional officer in the jail yesterday late after afternoon. The inmate refused to follow jail policy and attacked jail staff. Another source told NIT that the jailer received only minor injuries. On November 21st, public defender Susan Flander withdrew as Evenson’s attorney on the assault charges.
Evenson had three counts of assault causing injury to a peace officer dismissed by Judge James Drew in 2012.
Just last month, Evenson allegedly grabbed some goods from Kohl’s Department Store and fled in a car with another female suspect. He was later found hiding in a house in the Briarstone neighborhood and proceeded to jump into Briarstone Lake. He faces a December 3rd jury trial on a charge of 3rd degree theft, to which he has plead not guilty.
Evenson faces a plea hearing on December 6th on a charge of enhanced third degree theft. He also is in the middle of a court proceeding after Mason City police brought charges in September of eluding, child endangerment, possession of morphine, marijuana, methamphetamine, hydrocodone and hydromorphone,
In addition to a range of other charges Evenson has been accused of, he did plead guilty to felony D forgery in 2011 for an incident that occurred on May 13th, 2011 at Cenex Ampride located at 504 1st Street SW where Evenson presented a counterfeit $100 dollar bill to the convenience store attendant.
SUBJECT IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.
