MASON CITY – A familiar site on the Mason City horizon will soon be no more.
Crews began this week dismantling the South Federal water tower, the large, light blue structure next to McDonald’s just off the highway.
The city council determined that the tower was getting too old and needed so much maintenance that it was time for a new one to be built. The new tower will go in roughly the same place as the one coming down. Existing infrastructure that is still useful will be kept, and help keep cost for the new tower to just over $2 million.
Workers were seen late this week cutting the tower into large chunks and then using a crane to grab and then lower each section from he highest points, down to the ground, where each was then cut down further.
The new tower won’t be ready until late 2016 at the earliest, but no loss of service is expected to water customers.
