DES MOINES – An Iowa man refused to comply with police during a traffic stop, then fled the scene to barricade himself in a house, before cops gave him a whiff of CS gas.

The traffic stop, centered around an equipment violation, took a tense turn Tuesday night as a Des Moines, Iowa suspect led officers on a pursuit before entering a home for several hours.

After retreating to the basement of the home and arming himself with a makeshift spear, other residents of the home moved outside to safety as officers began lengthy de-escalation efforts. The 41-year-old suspect continued to make homicidal statements, including threats to stab officers.

The Metro STAR Crisis Negotiation Team was called to the scene to assist. A total of 7 hours of negotiations didn’t produce the results we desired, and the Metro STAR Tactical Unit responded to the scene. Officers were able to take the suspect into custody only after the deployment of CS gas into the home.

A fire at the home at the conclusion of this incident is now under investigation.
