Shooting in Mason City leaves one hurt and police digging for evidence

MASON CITY – A shooting this morning in Mason City left one hurt and police digging for evidence.

814 North Federal in Mason City

This morning, at 12:49 am, a person at 814 N Federal Avenue (the “Reynolds Apartments”) called police to request an ambulance for an injured subject there who looked to be in pain. The caller was uncooperative and would not disclose further information to Dispatch. Mason City Fire Department staff responded to the vague report. Fire Department employees began treating the 24 year old person and realized he had a fresh non-life-threatening gunshot wound. MCFD employees immediately notified police who then responded.

Mason City Police interviewed the victim and occupants of one of the apts inside 814 N Federal Ave. No one was very cooperative, especially when asked for a specific location where the shooting occurred or why it occurred. The victim does not live at 814 N Federal and has no permanent address. The shooting is under investigation.

Police are seeking assistance from the public in this incident says, “Due to lack of cooperation, we are asking residents and businesses within a 1 block radius of 9th and N Federal Ave to review surveillance camera footage from approx 12:30 – 12:50 am this morning. We are looking for any footage that may show 2 or more pedestrians arguing over a backpack before the shooting occurred in this general area.”

It’s been over ten years ago that tragedy struck Mason City due to gun violence.  Right across the street from this shooting at the Casey’s store, Brandon Crawford was murdered by Jamaal J. Leslie, who used a gun to commit the murder.  He was guilty of first-degree murder, sentenced to life in prison and lost his appeal in the case.
