DES MOINES – A convicted murderer from Mason City has lost an appeal in his case.
On June 2, 2012, a jury found Jamaal Leslie guilty of first-degree murder for shooting Brandon Crawford to death on August 9, 2011.
On direct appeal, his conviction was affirmed in 2014.
Leslie appealed again, this time on the denial of his application for postconviction relief (PCR), claiming his PCR counsel was ineffective. Specifically, Leslie claims in this appeal that his PCR counsel failed to fully develop the record regarding his claim that his trial counsel was ineffective.
However, the Iowa Court of Appeals concluded that Leslie’s PCR counsel did not fail to perform an essential duty and rejected his claim of ineffective assistance of counsel and affirmed the PCR court’s denial of his application for PCR.
Leslie remains incarcerated in the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison, serving his life sentence.
