CLEAR LAKE — Three rock-and-roll pioneers whose final performance together unfolded at the Surf Ballroom will be permanently honored outside the legendary Clear Lake venue during a history-making celebration on Friday, August 7, 2026.
The Surf Ballroom will unveil three life-size bronze statues honoring Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson as part of an all-day event featuring legendary entertainer Pat Boone, musicians connected to the three stars, a commemorative album release, a classic-car cruise and an old-fashioned sock hop.
The public statue-unveiling ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. in front of the Surf Ballroom at 460 North Shore Drive. Admission to the unveiling is free.
The permanent installation will honor the three young musicians who took the Surf Ballroom stage during the Winter Dance Party tour on February 2, 1959.
Hours after that performance, Holly, Valens, Richardson and pilot Roger Peterson were killed when their airplane crashed north of Clear Lake during the early morning hours of February 3.
That tragedy forever tied the Surf Ballroom and North Iowa to one of the most painful and enduring chapters in American music history.
The August 7 celebration will add another permanent landmark to Clear Lake’s preservation of that history.
In 2011, Clear Lake dedicated Three Stars Plaza near the Surf Ballroom, featuring artwork inspired by three stacked 45 rpm records. NIT covered that dedication ceremony, which included members of the musicians’ families, in a story readers can view here.
Following the statue unveiling, the celebration will turn toward classic cars and live music.
Pat Boone will serve as a guest judge for the annual C.L.A.S.S. Car Club Cruise around Clear Lake. The cruise will conclude at the Surf Ballroom before the evening concert.
Boone will also host an exclusive VIP meet-and-greet beginning at 5 p.m. in the Palms Ballroom, located upstairs in the Music Enrichment Center at 468 North Shore Drive. Guests should enter through the west doors.
Meet-and-greet attendees will have an opportunity to meet Boone and receive an autographed copy of the new “Three Stars Tribute” album.
Doors to the Surf Ballroom will open at 7 p.m., followed by the “Three Stars Tribute” album-release concert at 7:45 p.m.
Boone will headline the concert alongside Mario R. Valens, Jimmy Angel, “Sting” Ray Anthony, Ernie Reyes, Sha Na Na’s “Downtown” Michael Brown, and Jason Gutierrez and The JG3.
Mario R. Valens is the brother of Ritchie Valens and has remained closely connected to the Clear Lake community’s efforts to preserve his brother’s legacy.
Those family connections have long been an important part of the Surf Ballroom’s annual commemorations. During the 2011 Winter Dance Party, Ritchie Valens’ sister Connie Valens Lemos described returning to Clear Lake as a family reunion. NIT’s story on that visit can be read here.
The evening performers will share songs, memories and stories inspired by the music of Holly, Valens and Richardson.
The concert will also mark the release of Boone’s Gold Label “Three Stars Tribute” album, created to celebrate and preserve the music of the three performers and the lasting influence of the Winter Dance Party era.
After the album-release concert, The Whitesidewalls will take over the Surf Ballroom for a sock hop featuring the sounds and atmosphere of the 1950s.
The August event follows another major year of Winter Dance Party programming at the Surf. NIT previously reported on the 2026 celebration and John Mueller’s official tribute to Holly, Valens and The Big Bopper. That story is available here.

They better put a statue of Trump or he will feel left out and demand his statue be along side them because he’s done more for buddy Holly than anyone.
