MASON CITY – Much damage from the severe thunderstorm that hit Mason City Tuesday night and other surrounding North Iowa areas was still evident Wednesday morning. It was reported that 70 mile per hour winds blew through the city, playing havoc on many trees, power lines and outdoor items.

The northeast area had branches and garbage spread about everywhere. Yard leaf bags, that takes a lot of hard work to fill, were opened and once again, the leaves were loose. A lone umbrella found a resting spot behind a pick-up truck.

A power line was drooped across the street and was touching a car that was parked in the owners driveway at 645 South Van Buren. Police had to put caution tape for safety reasons.

Bob and Katie Havig, who live on Thrush Ave, south of the Avenue of the Saints said, “We lost our electricity around 12:30 am last night. We don’t have any water either because our well is powered by electricity. We just filled our freezer, so we hope it’s on soon.” This was said around 6:00 am.

A little before 8:00 am Wednesday, a call to the Fire Department had the Fire Fighters dispatched to 29th Street and South Adams.  A branch was draped over some power lines and smoke was smoldering in two places.

These are just a few examples of the havoc Mason City emergency responders were busy with. There were also broken stoplights, many more power lines down and trees lying across streets and roads, that needed to be barricaded.
