DES MOINES – Governor Kim Reynolds signed a diverse package of bills into law this week, addressing high-priority issues including public safety, victim rights, and mental health access for Iowa families.
A significant portion of the newly signed legislation focuses on the protection of individuals working within the judicial and legislative systems. Senate File 2280 authorizes members of the General Assembly, judicial officers, and attorneys within the Attorney General’s office to be issued professional permits to carry weapons. The law also establishes new criminal offenses for threatening or maliciously sharing the personal information of public officials and their families. Furthermore, Senate File 2379 expands broad protections for victims, including measures related to sexual abuse victim rights, sex offender registration, and mental competency provisions.
The Governor also prioritized family and child welfare with the signing of several House Files. Notably, House File 2256 provides a crucial protection for parents, clarifying that a parent or legal guardian’s inability to access appropriate behavioral or mental health treatment for their child is exempt from the legal definition of child abuse. In the realm of domestic safety, House File 523 now allows peace officers to file petitions for emergency protective orders on behalf of individuals seeking relief from domestic abuse. Additionally, House File 2360 was signed to further address regulations surrounding child endangerment.
Other bills finalized in this legislative batch include House File 703, which concerns information regarding state and federal student loan programs, and House File 648, relating to sedation provider host permits for licensed dentists. The Governor also signed Senate File 2296, which modifies civil penalties and regulations regarding digital financial kiosks across the state. These laws are set to take effect based on the specific applicability provisions outlined in each individual bill.
