MASON CITY – North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Continuing Education is launching a new Commercial Drone Pilot course series this May, offering individuals an opportunity to explore the world of unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Whether you’re a hobbyist interested in recreational drone flight or a professional looking to integrate drone technology into your current role, these courses offer valuable knowledge and hands-on experience.

The series is made up of two courses that can be taken separately or together, depending on a student’s interest or goals.

The first course, Commercial Drone Application and Operations, runs May 12–14 and provides foundational training for both personal and commercial drone use. Participants will learn how to operate drones safely and responsibly, as well as gain insight into the wide range of industries using drone technology—from agriculture and construction to photography and public safety. The course also addresses FAA rules and regulations, ensuring students understand the legal and safety standards required of drone operators.

The second course, Drone Part 107 Exam Prep, follows on May 15 and 16. It’s designed for individuals who are preparing to take the FAA Part 107 Knowledge Test, which is required for commercial drone operation in the United States. This class covers topics such as airspace classifications, weather, emergency procedures, drone maintenance, and flight operations. Students will also become familiar with air traffic control protocols and other elements necessary to pass the exam and become certified remote pilots.

The new drone series reflects NIACC’s commitment to providing timely, practical training that meets the evolving needs of the workforce. With drone use expanding rapidly across sectors, these courses offer an accessible entry point into a growing field.
