David J. Nelson, age 77 of rural Forest City, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at the MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City, IA.

Memorial services are being planned for a later date.

David John Nelson was born on April 23, 1947 at the Irish Hospital in Forest City, IA to parents Kenton and Loretta (Peterson) Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills and graduated from Forest City High School.

After school, he started farming with his dad and uncle and would later take over the farming operation, where they raised cattle, chickens, hogs, and were crop farmers as well. He belonged to the FFA and 4-H in his younger years where he showed cattle at the Winnebago County Fair. David loved all sports; playing fast pitch fair softball with the Forest City Merchants and Buttertop league in Mason City. He also bowled in several leagues in Forest City, Lake Mills, Northwood, and Clear Lake. David enjoyed traveling with friends to attend super bowls, other ball games, and traveling out west. He followed the Twins, Vikings, Cyclones, and Hawkeyes, recently enjoying to follow Caitlin Clark’s career. David also enjoyed the simple things, like going for rides in the countryside to look at fields and machinery while listening to RFD Radio.

David was a loving brother, uncle and friend. He was a caring and kind person and a devoted uncle that could always be depended on. He took his nephew, Michael, under his wing and taught him the farming operations, and his niece, Lisa to help her get her college education.

Survivors include his brother, Robert (Vicky) Nelson of Hawaii; sister, Jean Redig of Forest City; niece, Lisa (Nicholas) Osterkamp of Princeton, NC; nephew, Michael Redig of Forest City; friend, Joe Redig of Forest City; and the family pets, Shelby, Pippi, Sadie and Samson.

He is preceded in death by both parents, Kenton and Loretta Nelson; as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
