MASON CITY – Two Mason City youths escaped injury in a July 2nd, 2013 crash that allegedly involved alcohol.

According to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, 17 year-old Alexander Young was northbound on Nettle avenue just northwest of Mason City when he lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle proceeded to roll several times.

Both Young and the passenger, 18 year-old Alexander Bales, were uninjured at the time of the report.

Young was charged with failure to maintain control and possession of alcohol. Bales was charged with minor consumption.

Law enforcement indicated that both youths were taken from the scene of the accident by their parents.  They did not disclose a hotline for problem drinkers.

Young is the son of Mason City’s City Attorney and former School Board member Mark Young, who recently resigned from the school board and is said to be pursuing a career in education.

Bales was charged with interference with official acts earlier this year by the Mason City Police Department, but he plead guilty to a lesser charge of “refusal to obey orders”. He paid $300.00 in court costs and fines in that case. Bales also plead guilty to possession of alcohol by underage person in April. He paid $330.00 in court costs and fines in that case.

  1. Not our finest moment. Hmmm, what lessons were learned?
    No one was killed, fortunately
    What were the consequences.
Will the police be so accommodating next time
Can the parents come to the rescue and whisk them away next time
How will the law deal with this in the future
Aren’t attorneys supposed to all about giving people their day in court
    The entire incident is embarrassing.

  2. How many times has the Bales kid been arrested? Learned his lesson? It seems to me this young man won’t ever learn a lesson until it is too late. He could have very easily met his maker in this accident. So both youths were “taken from the scene” of the accident?? I’d like to know what this means? Did the boys call their parents and the parents rush to the scene before the police could get there?….or were the boys allowed to leave the scene after law enforcement got there? Either way, something stinks to high heaven.

  3. You people are ridiculas. All of you people bashing on them are horrible. Yes what they did was stupid. But trust me those boys learned there lesson. They know they should of been dead and they are well aware how lucky they are to be alive. They are both good kids. & To the people saying how they got off is because their parents have money, no . Grow up. & bringing up hunters death is sickly wrong. Try doing something with your life besides sitting behind a computer/ phone screen trying to bring others down.

      1. Bales was a decent runner and could have developed into a very good runner with a bright future. However, he turned his back on his talents to pursue a party life.
        Very sad and disappointing.

  4. Misfire my ass its called respect every gun as if it was loaded then you wouldnt have to worry about it going off and hurting someone

  5. Other states are not so forgiving. Witness this:

    Illegal Transportation

It is illegal to transport alcoholic beverages in the passenger area of a vehicle. Regardless of whom the alcohol belongs to, everyone in the vehicle may be charged with illegal transportation. The driver will receive the following penalties and the violation on their record, passengers will receive a monetary fine.

First offense — 12-month suspension of driving privileges. Maximum fine of $1,000 and points-assigned violation on driver’s record.

    Zero Tolerance While Driving Penalties

First offense — 3-month suspension of driving privileges for a BAC of more than .00.

    Under 21 DUI Penalties

Any person under age 21 also may be charged with a DUI: if he/she has a BAC of .08 or more; more than .05 with additional evidence proving impairment; any illegal drugs in his/her system; or other indications of impaired driving.

First DUI conviction — Minimum 2-year revocation of driving privileges.

Knowingly Permitting a Driver Under the Influence to Operate a Vehicle

    • Class A misdemeanor; possible imprisonment of up to 1 year; fines of up to $2,500.

    What other charges?

In addition to driving under the influence, an underage drinker may be charged with any of the following:

distributing alcohol to other minors (were there underage consuming passengers?)
    minor in possession
    child endangerment law violations

Perhaps it’s time to catch up with other Mid-Western states as far as providing meaningful consequences for underage alcohol violations in Iowa.

  6. Underage drinking is everywhere not just in rockwell at the boogie concert so start patroling mason city a little more and stay out of the small towns

  7. WE HAVE A JUDGE THAT LOVES YOUNG MEN AND SHE WILL GIVE THEM A LESSER SENTENCE AND SET THEM FREE ONLY TO RETURN AFTER COMMITTING ANOTHER CRIME. STUFF LIKE THIS PISSES ME OFF. THESE YOUNG MEN SHOULD OF BEEN DEALT WITH ACCORDING TO THE LAW. WHEN THEY GET INTO A CAR ACCIDENT AND GET HURT OR KILLED THEIR PARENTS WILL BE THE FIRST TO TO FILE THE BIG LAWSUIT. “SEMPER FI”

  8. There’s always been two standards of justice in Mason City. One for the police and their friends and families and one for the poor unconnected folk. If were some black or Hispanic kid he’d have been “charge stacked”.

There’s nothing fair or righteous about the justice system. It’s something I’ve understood my whole life.

      1. @howy-that is their answer for everything. People like Iberra do NOT accept responsibility for their own actions. It is always someone else’s fault.

  9. How in the world do you drive drunk, get in a serios accident, and get to leave the scence at the times with parents? No OWI and hauled to jail? This needs to be reported to appropriate parties to investigate the handling of this by the Cerro Gordo sheriff’s department. Report it is the only way to get an investigation into it so every party is made to take responsiblity for their actions. Make them accountable, especially the sheriff s dept so incidents like this aren’t handled inappropriately and covered up. Good kids or not they need to learn there are consequences to their actions. That apparently the parents AND sheriff’s dept are failing at. Shame!!!

  10. Just like mr jay lala’s kid that was in that shooting accident with that true kid he wasent old enough to have a gun or ammo nothing happen to daddy just shows money goes along way in this town

    1. Your are an idiot. If a gun went off in your hands and shot your bestfriends should you go to jail for that? It’s enough punishment to have lost your friend. IT WAS AN ACCIDEN

      1. The gun had a mind of it’s own. It just went off automatically on it’s own. It’s like the gun was alive.

      2. I’m not saying the kid should go to jail oh wait he can’t he was under 18 at the time I’m just saying somebody should be responsible just like whoever bought these kids beer they weren’t old enough to have beer just like the other ones weren’t old enough to have a gun or ammo

        1. I’m stunned that the True family hasn’t sued Lala. Perhaps they received an out of court settlement. They certainly deserve it.

  11. simple mistake…..thats all it is…..ever see a corpes…is that how you spell that word? maybe a dead 3 year old….there. thats how you spell dat word. drive drunk….kill a kid….or a mom….or a dad…is okay to drink an drive..just ask daddy the lawyer..wow!!!!!only in the metro mason city…you people are WORTHLESS

  12. As barney fife would say ” nip it, nip it, nip it”. Bales is doomed to be a career drunk and the other kid prolly thinks cause his daddy is a attorney he will get his hands slapped. Take away the car and everything that has a motor before someone gets killed. “SEMPER FI”

  13. r u kidding me thinking this is a mistake no it wasn’t a mistake regardless how good this kid is he made a choice and decision to do this something he isn’t even old enough to do .. would it of been just a mistake if one of these two boys would of gotten killed?? do any of u who keep saying things r mistakes ever think of that

    1. This was no mistake it was a poor choice on his behalf and driving with another passenger and putting him in danger. Stupid!!! They both could be dead right now and he will probably only get a slap on the hands. Alex has a record know for alcohol and other things. Come on, really good kid? What, I could say about his dad is another story but I’ll leave that alone!!!

  14. Was this incident reported anywhere but on this site? Was it in the Globe? Was it covered up?
