Pennie Wyborny, 68, of Plymouth, passed away September 19, 2024, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center with her family at her side. Born on November 10, 1955, to the late Donald and Agnes (Hite) Tosevigen, Pennie’s life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and the joy she brought to those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth and kindness that will be cherished by all who knew her.
As a youngster, her education began at North Central High School after the family moved from Mason City to Plymouth in 1965. It would later expand to include studies at NIACC, where she continued to broaden her knowledge and skills. Her professional life was as varied as it was fulfilling. In her early years, Pennie worked as a bartender at local favorites such as Pete’s Place and Stagecoach. Later, she found her calling in caring for others at the Manly Care Center, which eventually led her to her time at Mercy Hospital where she worked as a cook for many years. Her love for people and socializing never waned, as she continued to work part-time as a bartender at the Plymouth Lounge, The Mug, and Tossy’s Brew Ha, where her laughter and warm presence was a staple.
Pennie had a passion for collecting penguins, each one adding to a collection that was as unique and delightful as she was. An avid reader, she found solace and adventure in the pages of novels by Stephen King, and John Grisham. Shopping was another of Pennie’s joys, with frequent trips to Sam’s Club and the excitement of Black Friday shopping being highlights of her year. The thrill of playing slots at the casino and her unwavering support for the Minnesota Vikings showcased her fun-loving and optimistic nature. Her love for music was evident in her appreciation for classic country and 70’s rock, tunes that often filled the rooms of her home, creating a soundtrack to many cherished family memories.
Family traditions held a special place in Pennie’s heart, particularly Saturday nights spent with her son Donald and grandson DJ, whether at the movies or enjoying a sleepover at Grandma’s house. She cherished time spent with sons, Chad and Donald and loved making memories with each of her grandchildren as often as possible.
Pennie’s life was rich with love, marked by a 40-year journey with her beloved husband, Glen Wyborny. Together, they shared a family that included her sons, Chad (Katie) Dorenkamp and Donald Dorenkamp. Her role as a grandmother was one she cherished deeply to her grandchildren Veruca, Zoee, Maggie, Donald Jr., and Jude Dorenkamp. Her siblings, Glorie Reed, Tena (Terry) Compton, Roy (Suchanan “Cha Cha”) Tosevigen, Pamela (Ryan) VanLengen, and Rita Jezioski, along with her best friend, Mary Lou Wyborny Secory and many adoring nieces and nephews, will remember Pennie’s optimistic outlook and her innate ability to uplift others.
Pennie’s life was one of giving—of her time, her talents, and her heart. Her loving nature, coupled with her generosity, made her a cherished figure within her family. Her ability to maintain an optimistic outlook, even in the face of adversity, remains an inspiration to all who knew her.
