MASON CITY – Add all-American to NIACC’s Adam Berghult‘s resume.
Berghult, a freshman from Edina, Minn., received third-team NJCAA Division II all-American honors as a designated hitter on Monday.
“Adam had an amazing freshman year,” first-year NIACC coach Josh Merrill said. “He was our everyday cleanup hitter and he was a team captain as a freshman, as well.”
Berghult hit .373 with 10 doubles, 13 home runs and 42 RBIs.
Berghult, who also was the Trojans’ No. 1 catcher, was a first-team all-ICCAC Division II selection as a designated hitter.
“His leadership was less vocal and more led by example,” Merrill said. “He was first in, last out, asked for extra reps (even came in with the catchers at 7 a.m. before class to get in extra work.
“Our freshmen and sophomores looked up to him because he was always in the right place at the right time. On top of that, he produced at a high level on the field.”
Berghult is NIACC’s first baseball NJCAA all-American since Fox Leum was a third-team selection as an infielder in 2019. He is the school’s 12th baseball all-American.
Other ICCAC players to earn all-American honors were Southeastern pitcher Casey Perrenoud (second-teaam), Southeastern outfielder Cole Yearsley (second-team), Ellsworth catcher Jose Valentin (third-team) and Iowa Central infielder Evan Borst (third-team).
Berghult was one of 10 freshmen (of 36 spots) to earn all-American honors.
