MARHSALLTOWN – This Northern Iowa man used a gun to shoot and strike at least two victims, police say, and after a long investigation, he is facing a swath of felony charges.
On August 26, 2025 at approximately 8:00 PM, a gunshot victim arrived at the Unity Point Health Emergency Room in Marshalltown,Iowa. Marshalltown police officers and detectives were dispatched to the ER to speak to the victim. During the initial investigation, it was discovered the victim had been shot while at Nicholson Ford Park located at 1800 Marion Street in Marshalltown, a short time before. It was also discovered another victim had been struck in the head with a handgun during this incident and that both victims had items stolen from them.
The victims and witnesses were able to give officers a vehicle description and using FLOCK a suspect vehicle was produced very quickly. This aided in locating the suspects of this crime outside of Marshalltown.
After a lengthy investigation with many interviews and search warrants conducted, 19-year-old Nicholas Lee Olivares (pictured at top) of Aplington, Iowa, was arrested on the following charges.
– Attempt to Commit Murder (Class B Felony)
– Robbery 1st Degree (Class B Felony) 2 counts
– Willful Injury (Class D Felony)
– Assault While Participating in a Felony (Class D Felony) 2 Counts
– Going Armed With Intent (Class D Felony)
This incident was not a random event, police say, and it appears the victims in this case were specifically targeted.
During this investigation the Marshalltown Police Department was assisted by the Waterloo Police Department, Waverly Police Department, Butler County Sheriff’s Office, and Bremer County Sheriff’s.
This investigation remains active and additional arrests are expected, according to police.
