Vision Iowa Grants Awarded to Algona, Janesville, Bettendorf

DES MOINES – The Vision Iowa Board awarded $443,316 in grants to the construction of a bicycle/pedestrian bridge in Janesville, an agriculture and motorsports museum in Algona and renovations to the Family Museum in Bettendorf. The grants were approved Wednesday by the Vision Iowa Board at their meeting in Des Moines.

The following projects were approved for grants awarded from the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:

Barrick Rd. Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge – Janesville
Total Project Cost: $823,135
Amount Requested: $148,316
Amount Awarded: $148,316
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 30 days.

This project includes the construction of a 480′ long, 10′ wide bicycle/pedestrian bridge over the Cedar River at the location of the former Barrick Rd. Bridge. The bridge will improve recreation and connectivity in the city, address a critical safety issue by providing a safe river crossing for bicyclists and pedestrians and connect city parks on both sides of the river.

Kossuth County Agriculture and Motorsports Museum – Algona
Total Project Cost: $646,681
Amount Requested: $100,000
Amount Awarded: $100,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 60 days.

This project includes the construction of a 15,500-square-foot museum with sections designated to agriculture, motorsports, a model train display, a meeting room and restrooms.

Rethink, Reshape, Reinvent – New Learning Environments at the Family Museum – Bettendorf
Total Project Cost: $1,251,584
Amount Requested: $195,000
Amount Awarded: $195,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 90 days.

This project includes remodeling the current exhibit space into 7,744-square-feet of exhibit space with a family restroom.

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 359 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $135,234,849. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for June 13, 2012, in Independence.
