Missing Minnesota hunter found dead after search in Northern Iowa

WINNESHIEK COUNTY – A missing Minnesota hunter from Austin was found dead after a search in Northern Iowa.

On Wednesday, November 11, 2020, at approximately 6 pm, the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing hunter from Austin, Minnesota.  Two men from Austin came to the Canoe Creek Access Area in Pleasant Township of Winneshiek County to hunt.

The missing hunter was identified as Maya Htoo.  Htoo did not return to the designated meeting location, and the other hunter reported him missing.  The Sheriff’s Office and Decorah Fire Department conducted a search of the area throughout the evening and overnight.

On Thursday morning, November 12, multiple agencies and local volunteers were called in for assistance. Search teams were formed and an extensive search of the area was coordinated.  During the search Htoo was located in a wooded area of the state access and was deceased.  Htoo’s cause of death remains under investigation pending the completion of the medical examiner’s autopsy.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Decorah Fire Department, and Winneshiek County Emergency Management were assisted by multiple agencies including fire, law and EMS.
