Fort Dodge woman dies from gunshot wounds; suspect located and arrested

FORT DODGE – A woman who was shot in her car this weekend in Fort Dodge has succumbed to her injuries and police have located and arrested a suspect in the killing.

Over the course of the last two days, investigators with the Fort Dodge Police Department have been working diligently to seek justice in this incident they said in a statement. Information was provided from the onset of this investigation that allowed investigators to quickly identify those individuals involved. The timeliness of this information being provided was crucial to the development of this investigation.

On Sunday, September 20, a potential suspect was identified by law enforcement. Throughout the day Sunday, investigators spoke with witnesses and gathered evidence. Late Sunday afternoon, the suspect was questioned after being contacted by investigators. As a result of the investigation to that point, 18‐year‐old Fort Dodge resident Denharrio K. Lewil was
charged with Attempted Murder (B Felony).

As the investigation continued, the shooting victim identified as 18‐year‐old Fort Dodge resident Jlynn Beason, continued to receive medical care for her injuries. Late yesterday afternoon, Ms. Beason passed away as a result of those injuries sustained from the shooting incident on Sunday, September 20. This afternoon, Lewil was additionally charged with Murder in the First Degree (A Felony) following Ms. Beason’s death.

Lewil has made his initial appearance on the Attempted Murder charge and is scheduled to make his initial appearance on the Murder in the First Degree charge at 9:00 A.M. tomorrow in Webster County Magistrate Court. As with all cases, Mr. Lewil is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Fort Dodge Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident and encourage anyone with information to contact law enforcement. The Fort Dodge Police Department has been assisted in this investigation by the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Webster County Attorney’s Office.
