Mason City Schools to Participate in Healthiest State Walk

MASON CITY – On October 3rd, Mason City Community Schools will be participating in the Healthiest State Walk as part of the Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative. This initiative is an effort to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation by 2016 and the district wants to be a part of making our community and Iowa the healthiest in the nation.

Several of our buildings are providing opportunities to participate in the Healthiest State Walk. The district has incorporated this as part of the Blue Zones Project effort. Following are the events planned at the individual buildings throughout the day:
HARDING ELEMENTARY: Each class at Harding is scheduled for a 20 minute walk on the track on the south playground. Parents and guardians are invited to join their child’s class.

HOOVER ELEMENTARY: Classrooms at Hoover will take time during the day to walk the track at the Hoover playground. 4 laps on the Hoover track equal a kilometer.

JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY: Jefferson will start walking the track at 7:45 a.m. as the students arrive to start their day at school. Students and staff will end the day by going for a whole school walk starting at 2:40 p.m.-parents are invited to come join your child and walk home together.

ROOSEVELT ELEMENTARY: Students and staff will join together for a walk around the campus at 1:30 p.m.

LINCOLN INTERMEDIATE: The 5th and 6th grade students will walk during their scheduled family special times. Parent and guardians are welcome to walk with their students. Please sign in the office the day of the walk. The walk will begin at the front entrance to Lincoln Intermediate.

JOHN ADAMS 7: Students and staff will walk as part of period 8 study halls.

JOHN ADAMS 8: PE classes will plan to walk and classroom teachers may do walks as their classroom schedule permits.

MASON CITY HIGH SCHOOL: Teachers will plan walks as their classroom schedule permits. We already know it is a 7 minute walk from the north end of John Adams Middle School to the high school gym. The construction project not only is giving the district great facilities but is making us healthier every day.
