Iowa man jailed for repeatedly attempting to sexually assault teen girl

WESTGATE, IOWA – An Iowa man is in jail after authorities say he attempted on more than one occasion to sexually assault a teen.

Upon completion of an investigation in Fayette county, it was learned that Justin Thomas Cavnar, age 34 of Westgate, Iowa, allegedly sexually abused a 15-year-old female in June of this year and during the assault held her against her will. Further, a week later, police say he attempted to assault the juvenile again.

As a result of the investigation, Cavnar was arrested and charged with sex abuse in the third degree, a class “C” felony, False imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor and assault with the intent to commit sexual abuse, a class “D” felony. Cavnar was arrested on August 14 at his home in Westgate without incident and transported to the Fayette County Jail and held on a $10,000.00 cash bond.

Other charges may be filed in this case as the investigation moves forward. The Department of Human Services were also called in by the Sheriff’s Office to find placement for the victim.
