Mason City man guilty in road rage incident

MASON CITY – A Mason City man with a history of violence is guilty of criminal mischief after he pursued another driver and used an object to smash out their window during a road rage incident.

The incident unfolded on April 27, at 5:10 PM, when police say a “road rage” incident was reported at 15th Street SW and Pierce Avenue. Brandon Kropf was allegedly driving an SUV and pursuing another motorist around town after a possible traffic-related altercation. Kropf pursued until he confronted the other driver 15th Street SW and Pierce Avenue. At that location, he allegedly threw an item(s) at the other vehicle and broke a window. Police say the window’s estimated replacement cost is $175.00.

Kropf was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal mischief.  He later pled guilty and was ordered to pay $423.00 in fines, fees and restitution to the victim.

Kropf has been in the news a number of times previously for violent episodes. Just last year, on the afternoon of July 5, 2016, Mason City police officers were dispatched to the area of 2nd Street NW Jefferson Avenue on a report of a physical assault. Police say “the alleged assailant(s) left in a vehicle before police arrived. A male found at the scene was conscious but had a swollen eye and other possible injuries to his head and body.” Kropf was identified as the assailant and later evaded a serious assault charge with a guilty plea to simple assault.

In a more serious incident, on April 3, 2011 at approximately 12:13 AM, Mason City police officers were called to the 500 block of 8th Street SE in Mason City for a disturbance call. Upon officer’s arrival, Mason City Fire Department was also requested to respond to the scene. Jay Barrientes and Tony Walker, both of Mason City, were transported to Mercy Hospital East Campus for injuries received during a fight at the above location. Mason City Police Department Investigators arrested Brandon Kropf and his older brother Jared Kropf in connection with that incident. The beating caused Barrientes to be seriously injured requiring intensive care at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Allegedly, bats and crowbars were used to strike the men during the fight. Both Kropf brothers were later sent to prison briefly for the incident.
