Update on Bremer county home invasion: Resident shoots invader dead

SUMNER, IOWA – An alleged home invader was shot dead by the resident he had come to see and shoot, police say.

On Friday, January 6, 2017, at about 10:55 pm, the Bremer County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from 1359 Whitetail Avenue in Sumner, Iowa, reporting that someone at the residence had been shot. Deputies responded and located one person who had been injured and another person who is deceased. The deceased subject was identified as Steven Anthony, 46, of Davenport, Iowa.

The preliminary investigation indicates that shortly after 10:00 pm, on Friday, January 6, 2017, Steven Anthony arrived at 1359 Whitetail Avenue and asked to speak with John Eimers. Immediately following the discussion, Anthony attempted to kill Eimers by shooting him at close range with a handgun. Eimers was able to return fire, ultimately killing Anthony. Eimers was shot multiple times during the encounter and was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital. He has since been released.

The Bremer County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
