Iowa man now faces federal charges for stockpiling bomb-making materials, body armor, guns, flame-thrower and grenades

CEDAR RAPIDS – A Northern Iowa man accused of stockpiling bomb-making materials, body armor, guns, rifles, grenades and lots of other items of concern to police now faces federal charges.

Trevor John Satrom, age 33, from Oran, Iowa (about 15 miles east of Waverly), has been charged with one count of possession of a National Firearms Destructive Device Not Registered to Possessor. The charges are contained in an Indictment filed on March 23, 2016, in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids.

Earlier, when state charges were filed, an indictment alleged that, on or about February 10, 2016, Satrom was in possession of four destructive devices: three explosive bombs more particularly described as pipe bombs and one explosive bomb more particularly described as a pressure cooker bomb. Satrom had failed to register any of these destructive devices in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record as required by federal law.

On February 4, 2016 the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office started an investigation on a Satrom. After weeks of investigation and the assistance from the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) the State Fire Marshall service and the Division of Criminal Investigations (DCI) a search warrant was conducted on Satrom’s residence on February 10, 2016 and evidence was collected that made it appear Satrom may be possessing material used to build and detonate several types of bombs. Over 30 pounds of black gun powder, numerous steel pipes threaded with drilled endcaps, 2 pressure cookers, one drilled out, several feet of Hobby fuse, pounds of BB’s and shredded metal used for shrapnel, a working Flame thrower that has the power to shoot a 50 foot flame for more than a 60 seconds, Napalm Mix used in the Flame Thrower, body armor, several guns and rifles and smoke grenades.

That day, Satrom was taken into custody and transported to a locked Hospital for treatment and released on March 4, 2016. The Fayette County Sheriff’s office arrested Satrom that day and transported him to the Fayette County Jail where he was charged with Unlawful Possession and/or Storage of Explosive material, a class “C” Felony and held a bond of $100,000.00 Cash.

On March 8, 2016 after further evidence was tested and examined by the ATF, Satrom was charged with Unlawful Possession Of Offensive Weapons, four counts, Class “D” Felony. The Sheriff’s office has no further details of Satrom’s intent, however all his computers and electronic devices were seized in the Warrant and are being examined at this time by the DCI Lab.

If convicted on the federal charge, Satrom faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment. The status of the state charges was not immediately known.

Satrom appeared on March 25, 2016, in federal court in Cedar Rapids and was held without bond. Satrom’s next appearance for trial is set for May 23, 2016.

As with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lisa C. Williams and was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
