Democrats say robust oversight is needed for privatized Medicaid

DES MOINES – Democrats in the Iowa legislature won’t allow the state’s Medicaid program to slip into private hands without plenty of oversight from the government, if a proposed law passes.

Last week, Iowa Senate President Pam Jocum says, the federal Centers for Medicaid Services approved the unilateral plan by the Branstad-Reynolds administration to privatize Iowa Medicaid beginning April 1. “While it is helpful that the federal government has approved another delay in implementation, the state is far from ready. The chaotic transition to privatized Medicaid risks the health and wellbeing of more than 560,000 Iowans, including families living with severe medical challenges, children, seniors and people with disabilities.

“Iowans still can’t get answers to basic questions; they’re losing independent case managers who are paid to put patients first; and some are being told that they’ll no longer be able to see trusted local doctors and service providers,” Jochum continued.

“That’s why the Iowa Senate is working on robust oversight legislation to monitor Iowa’s privatized Medicaid program. SF 2213 will guarantee investments in system improvements, with meaningful stakeholder involvement, data collection to ensure we get good results, and contract changes to guarantee providers and members are treated fairly.

“Senate Democrats are committed to doing whatever they can to prevent any adverse effects with the implementation of this reckless privatization plan. Medicaid members, their families and Iowa taxpayers deserve improved health, better access to care and fiscal responsibility.”

I bet the cost to tax-payers will be higher under this plan. It always sounds good to privatize things but companies need to run at a profit “and there is nothing wrong with that” but they will increase their fees a lot faster and with less fan fare then if it were government run. Can anyone give an example of a government funded service or program that was privatized and the cost was lower or our taxes decreased. I don’t think so because it has never happened.

Oh yes, God forbid that these political genius’ aren’t controlling every aspect of our lives. How would we survive??
