AMES, IOWA – A campus bus driver has been arrested in the death of an Iowa State student who died as a result of a hit-and-run accident in December.
Ames police today arrested the driver of a CyRide bus in the hit and run accident that claimed the life of ISU student Emmalee Jacobs, age 18 of Urbana, on December 14, 2015. She was discovered by an university police officer at 7:04 AM, injured and lying in the road at Lincoln Way and Ash Avenue. She later passed away at Mary Greeley Medical Center.
After an investigation, Ames police say Ms. Jacobs was struck by a campus bus as she was in the crosswalk of Ash Avenue. The bus driver has now been identified as Benjamin Clague, age 23, of Gilbert. He has been charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident resulting in a death, a class D felony, and failure to obey a traffic control device.
Iowa State University President Steven Leath has issued the following statement:
“We appreciate the diligent investigative work of the Ames Police Department in determining the circumstances of this tragic incident. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Emmalee Jacobs during this very difficult time. The university is working in cooperation with the city to evaluate potential safety improvements and promote both vehicle and pedestrian safety around campus and the community.”
