MASON CITY – The Iowa Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting Thursday, Nov. 5, to discuss the proposed improvement of Iowa 122/Business U.S. 18 in Mason City from Monroe Avenue east to Carolina Avenue in Cerro Gordo County.

Reconstruction of the east and westbound lanes from Monroe Avenue to Carolina Avenue as well as on-street bike lanes, sidewalks and upgrades to the storm sewer system will be done in this project.

The project will take two construction seasons, currently scheduled for 2018 and 2019. All four lanes would be open during the winter. During construction traffic will be in a “2-lane 2-way pattern” in lanes not being worked on. The project will start with the westbound lanes in 2018.

The Iowa DOT tells NIT that the project is necessary for a couple reasons; like all pavements, the highway has a lifespan, and it has reached the point where it needs to be reconstructed. Also, this project will address crash concerns in the corridor.

The state’s share for this project is currently programmed for $6.6 million. Mason City is also contributing to the cost of this project. The North Iowa Regional Council of Governments (NIACOG) Transportation Policy Board, has programmed $1.8 Million in federal aid toward this project.

All interested persons are invited to attend this meeting anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. at the North Iowa Area Council of Governments, 525 Sixth St. SW, in Mason City.

The meeting will be conducted utilizing an open forum format. Iowa DOT staff will be present to informally discuss the proposed improvements. No formal presentation will be made.

The meeting space is accessible for persons with disabilities. However, if you require special accommodations at the meeting, please notify the Iowa DOT contact listed below by Nov. 2.

For general information regarding the proposed improvements or public meeting, contact Nick Humpal, P.E., district design engineer, Iowa DOT District 2 Office, 1420 Fourth St. SE, Mason City, Iowa 50401, phone 641-423-7584 or 800-477-4368
