One dead, one hurt in crash at Highway 122 and California Avenue in Mason City

MASON CITY – A Waterloo man is dead and an Osage man hurt in a crash at Highway 122 and California Avenue today in Mason City.

At approximately 5:39 a.m. on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, Mason City Police were called to a serious collision at Highway 122 and California Avenue. Upon arrival, responders found a Freightliner truck and trailer that was on its side in a field southwest of the intersection and Chevrolet Silverado pickup near the intersection. The semi was engulfed in flames and was difficult to extinguish because of its location in the corn field.

The Mason City Fire Department was able to extricate the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado. He was transported to MercyOne North Iowa. He is identified as Matt Hoveland, age 57, of Osage, Iowa. Hoveland was treated and released from the hospital. Hoveland had been traveling westbound on Highway 122 at the intersection with California Avenue.

The Freightliner was driven by Amar Pinjo, age 52, of Waterloo, Iowa. The Freightliner and trailer were southbound on California Avenue and proceeded through the stop sign at Highway 122 without stopping. The Freightliner struck the Silverado and veered off of the roadway into the field. Pinjo was ejected from the semi after it left the roadway and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Mason City Police Department was assisted by the Mason City Fire Department, the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, Mason City Operations and Maintenance, the Iowa Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Enforcement, and the Iowa Department of Transportation Maintenance Division.

The crash remains under investigation. If you have information about the crash or were a witness to it, please contact the Mason City Police Department at 641-421-3636.

Why do we need rumble strips? That’s what eyes are for. You must be a democrat, wanting to enable everyone. People are lazy and useless enough as it is.

Cerro Gordo county has put rumble strips on its blacktops to warn you a stop sign is coming up. Mason City should do this too.

I saw/had a big rig blow through the stop sign at 1stNW and Pierce a few weeks ago. Probably the same dude.

People blame the intersection. Drivers kill drivers, not intersections. Look and live, really very simple.
