MASON CITY – It was a tough night for the Mason City football team as it took its first loss of the season against a nifty Waverly team, 22-0.

Mason City got the ball to open the game and three plays later took a quarterback sack in its own end zone to hand the Go-Hawks a safety and a 2-point lead they would never relinquish.

Although strong on defense for much of the evening, the Mohawks had little to show on offense and no big plays whatsoever. Waverly added two touchdowns before the half to lead 15-0 at intermission.

The halftime show included inductions into the Mason City High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Leading the way was champion wrestlers Eddie Kline who won three state titles, along with Tim Krieger. The late Bill Woodhouse, a sprinter, was inducted, along with the 1996 – 1997 Basketball teams which were also state champs.

The second half of the football game was a defense slug fest as neither team could do much on offense. Waverley showed some flash on offense but Mason City kept them out of the end zone until late in the game. The Mohawks took more chances on offense but just couldn’t move the ball. Waverley forced a turnover late in the fourth quarter which led to the final touchdown.

Mason City falls to 1-1 on the season and will travel to the UNI-Dome next week to take on a very tough Cedar Falls team.
