UPDATED: Man dies from self-inflicted gunshot in Mason City

gunMASON CITY – North Iowa law enforcement confirmed a shooting death early Monday morning in Mason City. The shooting may have been during an attempted traffic stop, on the city’s west side. The gunshot injury was self-inflicted, and NIT is told the male subject was from out of state.

After noon on Monday, Mason City police were able to release a narrative of what they say happened:

At 2:11 AM this morning, Mason city police officers were notified to watch for a possible intoxicated driver. Approximately 4 minutes later, a Mason City police officer spotted a vehicle traveling west on Highway 122 from Pierce Avenue.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver refused to pull over. The officer followed the vehicle for approximately 3 minutes before the driver pulled over and stopped in the 400 block of South Eisenhower.

After the vehicle stopped, the officer saw that the male driver and only occupant of the car had a gun pointed to his own head. By this time, a Cerro Gordo County sheriff’s deputy had arrived to assist. The officers backed away from the car and shortly thereafter the driver fired a gun in the direction of one of the officers. About one minute later, the driver committed suicide with a handgun.

The incident is still under of investigation and the name of the man will not be released until his family is notified. No officers were injured.

The Mason city police Department was assisted by the Cerro Gordo County sheriff’s office and the Mason City fire department.

Do the police cars have dash cams? If so, wouldn’t the shot towards the officer be on that recording?

Possibly they have a video. The autopsy will show which gun shot him and I am sure there will be one. There always is when there is a gun involved. As of right now there is zero evidence that the police did anything wrong.

I can’t believe that no one is questioning this.

@Anonymous-What is the question? We need more INFO to question this. Right now there is nothing to go on except the news report.

One question should be what cop doesn’t return fire when being fired upon ? Which makes me question if it was a suicide at all. What could be so horrible to take your life over a simple traffic stop. It don’t make any sense.

The report says that when the cops walked up he had a gun to his head, if he turned the gun on the cops and fired I can guarantee you the first thing the cops would do is dive for cover which would give the perp plenty of time ti shoot himself before the cops returned fire. You think that life is like TV, it doesn’t work that way.

I need to know a lot more before I started spreading rumors that can’t be proven. Like, where was the guy from, did he have a record and what was it? Was he depressed for some reason? Just to spread rumors about the people we pay to protect us is just wrong.

@LVS…They could always ask for the Mud Hut Detective Service to investigate. I’m sure Inspector Clueless would get to the bottom of this.

No matter what happened or caused this to happen, its a shame.

@Buzz-Old Mud Hut is busy on his facebook page talking to himself again. But, that is what he does most of the time. He is rambling and whining but at least we don’t have to read it. He is a classic isn’t he?

It’s a conspiracy man….hahahahhahahaa..
