MASON CITY – Rubber-neckers wondered what the traffic stop was all about Thursday afternoon involving at least three squad cars at the Southport Shopping Center.
A person reported to law enforcement Thursday that a pickup truck had been stolen from the residence of a person locked up in the Cerro Gordo county Jail. This brother of the jailed individual told police the truck had been at the residence on December 9 but was gone the next day while the owner was locked up. The brother reported the truck stolen since the owner was incarcerated, and police spotted the truck rolling south on Federal Avenue Thursday just after noon.
Police pulled the truck over in the parking lot at the Southport Shopping Center at the 1600 block of South Federal.
During the ensuing investigation, police were able to contact the jail where the registered owner was behind bars.
“The owner did not want charges filed,” police told NIT.
However, police contacted the owner’s local relatives who came and got the keys. The driver left the scene soon thereafter.
No charges were filed and the stolen report was cancelled.
