MASON CITY – Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a report Friday afternoon of a man with long gun or rifle and took precautions to keep citizens safe.
The scene unfolded at the 1600 block of South Federal Avenue shortly after 4:00 PM when a woman called 911 to report that a male subject may be suicidal and be in possession of a weapon with potential range. Mason City police along with Cerro Gordo deputies and others converged on a house just south of the Casey’s convenience store across from the Southport shopping center. South Federal Avenue was blocked off, as was a nearby alley just east, behind the convenience store. Police told NIT that they did evacuate a number of persons from the area as the worked to gain access to the Caucasian male subject who looked to be about 30 years of age. One woman reportd that police wanted to lock custmers inside of Casey’s as a precaution. Soon, the male was brought out of a home just south of Casey’s and handcuffed. He was questioned by police and paramedics. A person who appeared to be an acquaintance of the man appeared on the scene and was greeted by police, who were heavily armed. The man spoke to the hand-cuffed subject, who seemed calm as police put their guns away and began to clear out of the area by about 4:20 PM.
Captain Mike McKelvey told NIT that the subject was troubled and that no gun was yet located, but that precautions are necessary in case the subject was armed and dangerous. The man’s name was not yet released. A more-detailed statement from police is exected.

The guy is denying everything. No gun involved and none found by police. He says his wife delibertly made a false report to the police. Lots of comments by the guy on Mason City Scanner.
And the outcome? Was he taken away to 5 East? I know what it feels like to be in the presence of a disturbed man with a gun. This summer there was even back and forth shooting between two nearby neighbors about a barking dog. (for intimidation purposes). It’s not a fun thing to be around. I grant police full rights to investigate anytime someone takes out a gun in populated areas and is acting in a disturbed or irate manner.
YOU….grant police full rights to investigate anytime someone takes out a gun in populated areas and is acting in a disturbed or irate manner?
Please come back to the real world if you can. This isn’t Dungeons and Dragons where you are master of the universe and people pay attention to your commands or decrees.

Please step into the real world. This isn’t a game of Dungeons and Dragons where you are the lord and master of your own fictitious world and people are waiting for your next decree.
@Buzz-No gun was found. It was a false report by his wife to get him in trouble.
@ LVS…thanks for the update, I appreciate it!
Buzz, sheriff’s deputies aren’t supposed to know about Dungeons and Dragons. So how’d you find out? Role playing games are for people with imaginations…
I knew someone that played dungeons and dragons a lot and you are right, they need a lot of imagination but very little life.
Don’t get caught watching Game of Thrones then…or any other movie based on Swords and Sorcery.
On top of everything else, you’re a sheriff’s deputy now too? It’s no wonder you don’t anything done, you can’t remember what you are or what you’re supposed to be doing.
