MASON CITY – A man who undertook a violent burglary last year was sentenced to 15 years in prison Monday.
Frederick Joseph Olson, age 42 of Mason City, was sentenced on July 28 by Judge Gregg Rosenbladt to two 15-year prison sentences that will run concurrently after pleading guilty to charges of felony third degree burglary and interference with official acts causing injury. Olson was charged with attempted murder and burglary after he had stabbed a man – and was, himself, injured – during an incident in August of 2013 at 1220 10th Street NW. He was later caught in the Central Heights neighborhood after police surrounded a residence at 1916 South Grover. Olson tried to burglarize a Rockwell business in December of 2012, leading to the third degree burglary charge.
In addition, Olson was charged with assault and 5th degree criminal mischief after a jailhouse scuffle in December of 2013 and later pled guilty to just assault. Jailers told NIT that Olson “broke a TV remote against the wall” during an argument with another inmate. There were apparent injuries in the scuffle but no medical attention was required. He got two days in jail and was ordered to pay $797.39 in court costs and fees.
