MASON CITY – Jack McCourt had some choice words for the Mason City School District again this weekend.

McCourt, a Korean War Veteran who typically sports a Mohawk t-shirt, stops by every now and again to give his perspective on what he calls the the sorry state of affairs in the Mason City School District, currently languishing in $36 million in debt with declining enrollment, more raises on the way for teachers and administrators, and taxes hiking with virtually no end in sight to any of the problems.

Saving money?

A start would be to get rid of any high priced consultants contracted from the outside. They’re not needed and most of the time they are nothing more than highly paid salespeople looking to finagle the school system into purchasing some “new and improved, educational flavor of the month”.

Make every administrator teach one class–from the superintendent on down.

If they dont have the teaching credentials, make them do something else.

Make every single admin…

“make every single administrator” justify their job, and freeze pay and hiring for them.

The problem is everyone on the board and everyone in administration has no incentive to reduce or even freeze spending. We need to pay an accountant a percentage of what ever he can cut in school expenses. We need incentives to save money. Asking people in the system to cut spending is like asking loggers to find reason not to cut down trees. Like asking cops to stop the drug war.

In all reality, loggers understand if they cut down all the trees they are out of a job. Our sckool system . . .?

Jack, it’s Common Core math. No one can figure it out.

Good Job Jack McCourt-It worked just fine for me. You have to be a subscriber. Jack is right in his comments. I have always had a problem with percentage raises as it favors the higher paid over the lower. It is the old deal the rick get richer and the poor get poorer. Just wait until you see your tax bill. Less students should equal less money needed not more.
