MC School board to meet again Monday; lunch prices set to be escalated

mason-city-schools-admin-bldg-spring-2012MASON CITY – The regular meeting of the Mason City Board of Education will convene at 5:30 PM in the Board Room of the School Administration Building.

The school board will be recognized for its volunteerism as part of Iowa School Board Recognition Month.

The district will be presented with an Energy Efficiency Award by Jim Collins of Alliant Energy.

A public hearing will be held on the possibility of starting the next school year prior to the legal start date of September 2, 2014. Approval to apply to the Department of Education for the waiver is recommended by district staff. A public hearing will also be held for determining the option of 1080 hours or 180 days of instruction for 2014-2015. District Administration will provide information and recommendations. Local School boards are authorized to make this decision. Approval is again recommended by district staff.

CFO/Board Secretary Ramona Jeffrey will present a recommendation to increase food service prices for lunch and breakfast for the 2014-2015 school year. Approval is recommended by district staff. Superintendent Anita Micich is recommending that student fees for the 2014-2015 school year remain the same as the fees for the 2013-2014 school year, with the exception of meal prices, which were previously approved. Approval is recommended.

Supervisor of Facilities/Safety Coordinator Todd Huff will present recommendations for roof replacement projects. Approval is recommended.

The Mason City High School Concert Choir students are asking for permission to travel to New York for five days in March 2015, to perform at Carnegie Hall. Specific travel dates are pending finalization of Carnegie Hall performance calendar.

At the end of the meeting, a closed session will be held to discuss negotiation strategy regarding the teacher’s union and the pay raise it has requested.

What difference does it make what the lunch price is? Very few pay for it anyway.
In a school that is VERY deep in debt, why did you offer the teachers any kind of raise? Why not tell them they are lucky to have a job in a system that is in steep decline?

@Sad-Very true comments. It is the old rule that seems to be getting more and more popular in that you charge the people that can pay more to subsidize the ones that can’t pay. There used to be an incentive to get more which was work harder to get more. No incentive any more. Just apply for government aid.

So true. I was told a couple years ago only about 30% of the kids have to pay full price for lunch. I’m sure it’s lower than that now,but yet I’m still paying full price. I guess my kids will be taking more and more sack lunches.
