Fatal accident investigated by Ames police

AMES – Police in Ames are investigating an auto accident that claimed one life and seriously injured another person.

The accident involved two vehicles and two drivers with no passengers.

According to police, at approximately 5:34 P.M. Thursday, the Ames Police Department received a call of a serious head-on accident in the 1100 block of East 13th Street. An eastbound car crossed the double yellow line striking the Skunk River Bridge on the westbound side, bounced off, and struck a car heading west. Both drivers were taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center. The driver of the eastbound vehicle was pronounced dead. The other driver appeared to have serious, but not life threatening injuries. Technical Accident Investigators were called to the scene to determine the cause of the accident. At the time of this release, East 13th Street is still closed between Stagecoach Road and Meadowlane Avenue. We expect the road to reopen sometime before 9:00 P.M.

The names of the drivers are being withheld pending notification of family.
