Iowa labor leaders call on Congressmen Latham and King to stop their political grandstanding

DES MOINES – The Iowa Federation of Labor called today on Congressmen Latham and King to reject the House Republicans’ plan to tie the repeal of the Affordable Care Act to any continuing resolution to prevent a government shutdown. Labor leaders from Iowa expressed concern that such a strategy was yet another political gimmick that would hurt all residents of Iowa.

“There is no excuse for this shut down, this is nonsense” said Ken Larson, an employee at the Rock Island Arsenal. Larson is also Vice President of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 2119 in Quad City area, and Vice President at Large for the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. “Government workers provide essential benefits for the American public. We want to come to work, and do a good job and provide services. They are using federal workers and families, as pawns, and using the tax payers the same way. This is unfair to employees as well as the American public.”

“I watched the news reporter interview 5 and 6 year olds last night on the subject of getting along and arguing. They seemed to have a better grasp of getting along than our Republican Congress.”, said Ken Sagar, President of the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. “Americans deserve better than these temper tantrums from Washington Republicans still sore over losing the last presidential election. Our economy is slowly recovering but millions of Americans are still not better off. We deserve to have a Congress focused on working families and not on the interests of corporate insurance companies. The fact that they have forced a partial shutdown of the United States Government, over a law that has been upheld by congress, the voters and the Supreme Court, is just childish.”
