MASON CITY – Might be best to get your cars off the streets of Mason City while snowplow drivers clear off the white stuff.

Around 7:45 AM Monday morning, a Mason City snowplow and sand truck sideswiped two parked vehicles on South Vermont Avenue.

With the prediction of two to four inches of snow, Mason City snowplows were out early Monday morning. One truck was southbound on South Vermont when he sideswiped two parked cars.

“It’s blizzard like conditions out here,” said one Cerro Gordo Sheriff’s Deputy, that was at the scene.

Chuck Kraft, of 25 S. Vermont, an owner of at least one of the vehicles, said, “It wouldn’t have been so bad if it were my old van, but it got my wife, Dixie’s car.”

No damage to the snowplow. The Alternate Side Parking Ordinance and Emergency Snow Route will go into effect at 4:00 p.m. today in Mason City.

when the snow plow side swiped my sisters car the city and road dept said they (drivers) aren’t liable for damage they “may or may not cause” especially if you didn’t witness it yourself… your word against theirs

Crappy paid jobs ? Where in the hell have you been hiding? – public servants jobs anymore are some of the best paying jobs with super good health insurance and retirement benefits –

ok, for starters, the times and hours that these drivers work is up to the city and not the drivers, they are just the crappy paid servants of the city of mason city who work hard to clean the streets so that the citizens can go about their life! It is not these employees job to clean your sidewalks and driveways! Secondly, this employee is a hard working guy who does not need his reputation degraded by comments on this website, so please delete the comment which reffers to him as ANGRY man, thank you!! That comment is why I am glad this poor man does not have his name mentioned!! From what I have heard, which fyi is not heresay or gossip; like the sherriff stated blizzard conditions, so basically anyone who loses control of their vehicle we should blame on them speeding because of one guy who clames they go 40 mph down the street(you must own a speed gun)!! This was just a guy who was doing his job(which he has done for years!!!) and had an accident, I am sure he will beat himself up beacause he feels so bad, so lets not be rude and have some respect for what everyone can agree was just another accident due to crazy n iowa weather!!

some of you have way too much time on your hands

The City does a great job of removing the snow, yes they do come through a second time to clean the street off, again, very good. Stop your bitching or shovel your street before they get there, then you won’t have to worry about snow in your drive way.

I know that guy! He lives like acouple houses down my Alley!!!! DONT MESS WITH HIM!! HE GET ANGRY!!!!

Who is the guy standing in the street without any reflective material on. This is the person who isn’t worried about safety.

If you are close enough to the truck to hit that guy, you shouldn’t be driving anyway.

It’s daylight and if a driver can’t see that big ol truck with the door open they better quit driving. Maybe it’s a private citizen. Think man think. You can do it. Only takes a few brain cells to think nice instead of snarky.

Same could be said for the driver that hit the parked cars it was daylight. So take your own advice and use a couple of brain cells and be safe. Just use a couple though doesn’t seem like you have any extra ones.LOL

still gives me more than youy have since you wasted time peeping in for no reason other than to give your worthless 2 cents.

If Mason City had off street parking this would not have happened. I would rather have the snow in my driveway then on the road all over town. People are spoiled here.

Exactly, truth be told…

My garage is on an alley and it’s a mess! I don’t think they have been down it at all today. And after the last snow they didn’t plow it then either. Would it kill them to come through and get rid of some of the stuff in the alleys?????

Just let it melt, we will all be money ahead

Oh but then the whiners will be bchin because the city’s not plowing and cars are sliding all over the place.

NIT mentioned the name of the owner of the vehicle that was hit. Now please tell us who was the driver of the snowplow.

It’s time to get out of town. The population loss exposed in the last census was alarming to say the least. This is a city with only good government and hospitals jobs. Everyone pays more to support a city that’s shrinking.

Get out like many others have before it gets worse. MANY other areas are in better economic shape with better futures. Pack up the kids and the wives and get the hell out of Dodge.

Yes those dilapidated empty ugly old businesses on N Fed need serious attention. The owners should be fined for allowing such ruin. Where was Max’s attention for his area when he was on the council? Why do the people that live there put up with that blight? It’s a poor preview coming into MC. But on the other hand if they fix them up their taxes will go up.

@anonymous-Max lives in the South End of town.

Wasn’t that his ward at one time? He’s the one that planted the Christmas tree on the corner where Tropical Fish used to be. His fans always claimed he’s the best council person ever and that he cared more than anybody else. He seemed to have all the answers. Or was that just hype?

@anonymous-Max was a At Large Council Man which meant he had the whole city, but, he always lived in the South East Section of Mason City.

@mimi-they just need to slow down. They come down our street so fast they throw snow all the way to the sidewalk. One of these days they are going to take out a car at a intersection and kill someone. They drive fast to get done and then work overtime scraping the streets.

Have you EVER plowed snow? If not shut your trap. I have done contact plowing and it was a PITA. I cannot believe the crap these guys have to go around. Same story…plowing too much…not plowing enough-buried my driveway. etcetc. bunch of damn whiners, it’s Iowa people. If you pile your snow on the end of the driveway and it goes in the street your getting buried again.. Put your snow in your YARD, Not on the narrow parking

@msgordy-I was plowing snow when you were still in diapers dipstick.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. get a life

Where did you expect it to go, to the moon?

I have the perfect solution. The City should stop plowing all streets so that no driveway is ever blocked again.

Or as an alternative, you can pocket the curb line ahead of your drive so that snow will go into there, and not the drive approach itself.

You know, that snowplow man did the same thing to my driveway too….

Shoveled it 4 times huh? Who is the dumb ass here? Was there snow still in the street? If not where did it come from? Go in the house and wait until the plows are done.

Yea maybe everyone can wait until 5 p.m to go out and clean the sidewalks and driveways. No plow my street until 2pm same as last week City plows milk it for days. I’m sure they will be out at 4am scraping the wet pavement.

Hang in there Mimi, winters almost over, I hope!
I just have to say I’m disgusted with the way most of the commenters are on here. Talk about mean spirted. I hope they are not representing the city (staff). It’s seems there is no moderater either. Matt? Clearly self moderation is not working.

I live on sixth st. sw, and the snow plows go Thur. here doing at least 40 mph, and have knocked down several mail boxes.I guess they do not have to obey the law….Jim

Iowa DOT…

ooooops. Thank goodness for insurance. Luckly it was a snowplow & not an uninsured driver hit & run. 🙂

Vermont is a narrow street in that area anyway, there should be no parking on the whole street. Isn’t the snow ordinance in effect.
