MASON CITY – At Tuesday’s school board meeting, district official Hal Minear indicated that enrollment at Mason City schools again is in decline although he indicated that the losses seem to be “leveling off.”
Exact figures from previous years were not made immediately available for comparison to the numbers for this current school year, which at this time is 3,898 students according to a chart the district provided.
Enrollment numbers have a direct impact on the amount of state funding a district receives.

Right! Less enrollment means less funding, except in Mason City. VOTE NO to any levies!!!
The only way that student populations increase here is through immigrant populations—>like what is going on in Austin, MN.
But you don’t want that…haha
One might ak the question, why do so many kids in the Mason City school district choose to open enrole out of the district. I believe one of Clear Lakes top wrestlers used to be in Mason City, I believe 2 of their top basketball players live in Mason City, and those are just visable ones. Why do they flee?
To sad but true… The “one of Clear Lake’s top wrestlers” you are talking about is on his third school. Forest City, then Mason City now Clear Lake. In a year, see how this kid’s story turns out and ask the question again. Not sure about the basketball players. How many kids with Clear Lake addresses go to school in Mason City? I know of a few. I think you are looking at one side of the data (and very little data at that) and have not even thought about the other side, nor taken any time to take a close look. Your post is not a good one.
Enrollment dropping.
BTW, we need more $ to support all the new buildings we built even though we knew we would have fewer students.
Bend over, taxpayers.
Fewer students=less money needed. Why do these people need more and more when there are less and less students? They need to wake up and understand there is no free ride. VOTE NO.
