Clear Lake man jailed on felony marijuana charge

MASON CITY – An early morning traffic stop by Cerro Gordo County Sheriff deputies has led to a felony drug charge for a Clear Lake man.

Deputies made traffic contact near the intersection of Federal Avenue S & 18th Street SE in Mason City at 1:31am Thursday morning. As a result of a large quantity of marijuana found during the traffic stop 18-year-old Marcus Jamaal Hughes was arrested at the scene.

Hughes was transported and booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail shortly after 3am. Hughes has been charged with one class D felony count of possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver.

Marcus Hughes had competed on Mason City High School’s track and field team until he graduated high school in 2012.

As of midday Thursday, Hughes remained in the county jail on a $5,000 cash or surety bond.

A defendant convicted of a class D felony faces up to 5 years in prison and a maximum fine of $7500.
