OPINION: Iowans, we are better than this

Iowans, we are better than this.

Women are still underrepresented in 48 states, with 19 states and 22 percent of the nation’s population without a female U.S. Senator or Representative.  Among these, Iowa sits as only one of two remaining states that have yet to have a woman serve in either chamber.   We as Iowan’s can do so much better than this and we don’t need a binder full of women to find the right one.

Christie Vilsack is a woman that will not only lead Iowa in the right direction but lead America.  Christie has spent her career in education and therefore knows how important education is not only for our children, but also in our economic recovery.  As former first lady of Iowa, Christie is best known for her hard work in creating a statewide literacy initiative from 2000 to 2006, Christie raised funds to give a book to every kindergartener in the state.

As a former student of North Iowa Area Community College, I have had the opportunity to talk one on one with Christie when she came to the college to talk with students about education.  With Christie I know that she will go to work to preserve Pell Grants so that every child has the opportunity for a higher education.

I know Christie and I know we can count on her to make sound decisions based on good economics and facts – not politics.

Iowans we must not be the last state standing to send a woman to Washington.  We can and we must do better.  It is time for women to be heard.  Stand with me and elected Christie Vilsack for U.S Congress.

Many of you talk of qualifications for being a representative or senator and Ms. Vilsack’s lack thereof. I would like to know when one gets the qualifications you speak of. I know Senator Grassley was a farmer. Does that make him qualified? BIG DEAL as LVS would say. What about George Bush? His dad was president, did that make him qualified? I know those 2 are republicans but I am sure you right wingers will say the same about President Obama and Senator Harkin so I thought I would let you know that using those 2 isn’t going to work for you.

Thank you Troy. We really do need her there. Iowa needs to move forward and she will help.

We all deserve better than Christie Vilsack too.

the qualifications to hold elected office are pretty low. its a popularity contest….

Being a governors wife does not make a person ready for congress.
I do not vote based on race or sex.

The answer for higher education cost is for colleges to get real about costs. There is too much deadbeat overhead in higher education.

Sorry Troy, no one is buying your premise.

Dollars to donuts, Troy IS PC!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve wondered what happened to him. There he is. JMHO of course!!

Sorry. I couldn’t vote for Steve King and I couldn’t vote for her. I don’t want either of them representing me.

We ended up with Hillary because she was married to Bill. But I always thought she was a lot smarter than he was. I was disappointed when her efforts at health insurance reform failed. I felt she would have done a decent job of it. The fact she failed showed she was making the insurance companies mad. That’s who we need to make mad.

You’re right about Hillary, Katie. Bill is no slouch, but Hillary is a Rhodes Scholar. They don’t come much smarter than that. Could you support her in 2016? I have a feeling she’ll be on the ticket. I have nothing against Joe Biden but I would vote for Hillary in a heartbeat.

I’m finding conflicting information on the Internet about which of the Clintons was a Rhodes Scholar. Some sites state that Bill was the Rhodes Scholar and other sites claim Hillary was. Hopefully I can find some accurate information. Either way, both of the Clintons are smart cookies!

Pres Bill Clinton was the Rhodes Scholar. Pres Obama won the Nobel Prize for Peace. Two outstanding presidents. Obama’s second term will be just as good as clinton’s was.

@happy guy-you are entitled to your opinion, even though in my opinion you are wrong. In my opinion Obama is a miserable failure as a president and as a leader and will only go downhill in his 2nd term. Now, Hillary I might just vote for.

LVS you’re a little late on this blog. 4 months. If you can keep an open mind you will soon see it is you who will be wrong.

@happy guy-now how the hell did that happen/ I always try to keep a open mind. Don’t always succeed, but I do try.

Katie — Define “Ended Up With Hillary”?? Unless I fell asleep, she wasn’t the nominee or president. Yeah, she was a first lady, no different than Martha Washington or Barbara Bush. I guess I don’t understand…enlighten me.

Where does this idea that if your spouse is an elected official that qualifies you to be one? Why is it if some senator or congressman dies there spouse takes over their seat? Why is it that we elect a President and all the sudden their spouse is making public policy for the entire nation? If you like Cronyism I suppose that’s as good an exuse as any but if you really want the best person for the job don’t vote based upon who they are married to.

Where do you get the idea that their platform is based on their husbands political career? I think you’re making assumptions. Each woman could stand on her own. That’s most likely what threatens you and those who think like you. You’re always threatened by strong willed women. Go cry to your mommy.

It would be absoltely wrong to vote for a person just because they are a woman, man, black or white. They need to be qualified to be in our government. You wouldn’t hire someone to be a doctor unless they had been educated to be a doctor and the senate is the same way. It is NOT a popularity contest. It is real and very important to our state. My personal opinion of Vilsac is she is a piece of fluff with no experience at all. he only claim to fame it she was a teacher (big deal) and is married to our ex-governor. Neither of which qualified her to go to the senate. She is a puppet and no more. I do not say that because she is a democrat but because it is true.

In Troy Sahr’s fanciful liberal land, all that matters is your sex and/or race.

It’s just as wrong NOT to vote according to gender, race, religion etc.. Or because you think they’re going to promote welfare to people of the same color. But Cons continue to do so.

Ok, so we need to send a woman to DC. I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with Mrs. Vilsack. In my opinion, she will do whatever her husband, Sec of Ag and former govenor, Tom Vilsack tells her to do. She has no experience in elected office to prove that she thinks on her own. She is running on name recognition only. Meanwhile her husband is putting out memos to all Federal building cafeteria’s to not serve meat on mondays. Calling it “Meatless Mondays”. How does that serve the ag producers of beef, pork, poultry in Iowa? Does that sound like someone helping Iowa? Now it has started up at the college my son attends. She really wants to be a politician. Start at the county or state level.

Telling people to eat less meat is the same thing my doctor tells me at every physical. I don’t want my Representatives telling everyone that its ok to eat meat three times a day and die of a heart attack just so the meat producers of Iowa can get richer.
