Presidential campaigns mark 100-day countdown to big election

James Q. Lynch, CR Gazette –

The campaigns of President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are marking the 100-day mark in the race for the White House with event to pump up their volunteers.

“Volunteers make all the difference,” Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey told Romney campaign Iowa field directors during a call Saturday, 101 days before the Nov. 6 election.

Toomey predicted Romney will carry Iowa because of volunteers’ efforts.

“As long as we do our part – working at the grassroots level, working person-to-person, working phones, going door-to door, doing the networking we need to do, I’m very confident Mitt Romney will carry Iowa and be elected the next president of the United States,” Toomey said.

Meanwhile Obama for America marked the 60-day countdown to the start of early voting and 100-day countdown to Election Day with an “It Takes One to Get Six” day of action with 170 events across Iowa.

“Every single person can make a difference in this election – and this week we’re asking supporters to start by taking one action that will help grow the campaign,” said Iowa Obama for America Director Brad Anderson. “The idea is that if we commit to doing at least one thing to organize our communities, the combined impact will ensure that this president can keep moving this country forward for another four years.”

The events and attention from both campaigns is just one more sign that Iowa is, as Toomey said, a “classic swing state.”

“I’m very excited about where this is heading,” he said. “The race is very, very close in Iowa now. A variety of polls show the race in Iowa is virtually tied.

“That’s where the evenness of it seems to end,” Toomey said. “I think the energy is on our side. The volunteers are turning out, the work you are doing today … this summer, right through the fall, that’s how we’re going to win this in Iowa, how we’re going to swing Iowa into our column where we need it. I think it’s going to happen.”

Also Saturday, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who is thought to be on Romney’s short list of potential running mates, was scheduled to speak at a rally at the Capitol in Des Moines.
