Mason City’s most-written about bar, and a target of the City Council, has been closed the last three nights.
On owner Kathy Hebel’s Facebook page, she said the bar is “not closing.”
“July 25, 26,27,28 dj playing drink specials WE ARE NOT CLOSING,” she wrote on July 22.
The Mason City council told Hebel at their last regular meeting to cut down on the police calls to the bar or her liquor license would not be renewed.
Sources close to the situation said “Alliant Energy is shutting the juice off” but that could not be confirmed. An NIT reader snapped a photo on Thursday evening just before 10 PM of the establishment, all dark with no lights on.
Mason City realtor Tim Latham confirmed today via phone that the building is for sale.
“I have no financial interest other than listing the building for sale,” Latham said. “I couldn’t tell you if the power is off.”
There was no word on whether the bar would be open Saturday. A phone call to Alley Katz was not answered Saturday at 11:30 AM.

I’m sorry but this site helps to only front the division between the people of mason city. It was a nice boring town a few years ago, where one could party and have fun. Now it’s filled with scrum white and black. Maybe we should focus on healing this broken town and getting the scrum out. Not on the color of skin.

It is about time for Mason City residents to start moving these people out. If you think they are going to go away, you are wrong. People like this know one thing. FORCE. I think we are losing prospective here. The alley Katz was a business that the boys decided to hang out at and now it’s closed so what’s next. The next place they decide to hang out at are we going to close that to and then the next place till there are no businesses left? I don’t go to bars but there are good people out there that do just to unwind. There was nothing wrong with the Alley Katz and now it’s gone. Some say that they hang out now at the Island, are they going to close that next? Instead of closing businesses, start a neighborhood watch, have 911 on speed dial. The police are doing what they can but they can’t be everywhere, we are everywhere. We out number them more than 100 to 1. We don’t need guns we need our eyes and phones. Don’t get me wrong I would love to put them 6 feet under and with our judges that might be the best place but if we do this legally they all either be in jail or on the run.
The problem here, and I agree with most of what your saying, is that some ppl here HAVE done just that and then our court system lets them right back out along with the statments that ppl wrote against them with thier names. So what happens is ppls property or health gets damaged so they stop calling. along with getting rid of the criminals, we need top get rid of the “bad” judges and DAs so that we can keep these ppl locked up and off our streets.
These judges are not stupid, we send a message that we are going to be more proactive and watching these scumbags. We call the cops, the cops arrest them and the judges let them go, how long do they think they will have a job? It will not happen over night but we will take OUR town back with or without the judges help. We don’t need to kill any of these douche bags, maybe a few bruises to get the message across. We just have to do it together, we out number them.

Is it really that hard to just get along? If people could learn that pride can only get in the way and creates situations that are unnecessary, maybe there would be a chance. People are to caught up in themselves to see that the reason they have problems is because of their own actions. So getting mad at each other doesn’t make it better; it creates more bullshit. None of this stuff could possibly make anyone happy; it takes too much to be pissed all the time. Everyone is different; we got to work together people. Damn.

As an owner, you have two choices, allow that clientel in with the risk of further violence, or begin to screen patrons. In the latter case, it might be a rough road financially, but in the end, if done correctly, can breath fresh air into the establishment.
There are other establishments in Mason City who practice that, and have started to see the fruits of their efforts pay off.
