Charles City Learning Center utilizes grant for new cribs

FLOYD COUNTY, July 26, 2012 – On a recent morning at TLC (The Learning Center) amidst a cacophony of children’s voices at mid-morning recess, several babies could be found in the infant room, calmly being rocked to sleep. The infant room is now compliant with updated cribs that meet new, State required standards: shorter to the ground, non-moveable sides, and mattresses at one level only. The cribs are also considered “evacuation cribs” because they can be easily rolled to a safe location should an emergency occur. Through a grant issued by the Floyd County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, 11 updated cribs were purchased, allowing the center to be much closer to meeting regulations, required by the State, by December 2012. The center is still in need of four cribs in order to achieve full State standards.  The cribs are used in the infant room (six weeks to one year) and the Wobblers room (up to 18 months).

The FCCF grant is also helping to fund professional development for the TLC staff. Training to retain licensing occurs once a year. In-service days, off site classes at the ISU extension office and AEA offices and background checks are also supported by this grant.

Director Machelle Friedrich and financial manager Kim Wilson both agreed that the grant was very much appreciated. With the many new regulations in place for childcare centers, costs to meet these regulations have skyrocketed. The FCCF grant has helped to buffer these costs, and allowed staff to concentrate on the most important business at hand, the children.
