Cannonball Day held Saturday at East Park

MASON CITY – The newly painted and renovated Rotary Cannonball 457 had a line of people waiting to get a close-up look at the 1912 Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad steam locomotive at the Annual Cannonball Day, Saturday.

Nolan Lindstrom waved to his mom, Joy, from the window of the massive engine with a big smile on his face. “We are from the Twin City area, but I used to live here and wanted the boys to see the 457.”

Along with the 457, there were railroad trains of other shapes and sizes being enjoyed by people Saturday. An electric train set was up and running beside the Cannonball. A miniature choo-choo, engineered by the Greimann Bros. Inc. GBI Railroad, from Chapin, Iowa, shuttled people around the park and a hand-powered, children’s train track was set up for the kids.

Siblings Lucy and Henry Maassen were on the train track. Lucy was having a little trouble getting around, relying on big brother to help push her. Henry didn’t seem to mind. “Lucy, you need to crank harder and do it yourself,” teased Grandma, who was watching from the sidelines.

What would Cannonball Day be without the barbecued chicken? Cars lined up, at least, two blocks long waiting to pick-up their chicken. Provided by HyVee and served by Mason City Evening Lions Club, the chicken line was never short.

“There’s no quitting time,” said Ryan Evers, of HyVee. “We’ll be here until it’s all gone.

The two Lion members selling tickets, with shirts on saying, “We Serve” on front, informed, “A quarter chicken is six dollars and a half is eight dollars.”

It was a cool, sunny day for the event. Along with the Cannonball and chicken, there was a Kids Fun Run, Bill Riley Iowa State Fair Talent search, children’s activities, car show, a clown making balloon animals, live music and bouncing balloon houses, one provided by the North Iowa Youth Center.
