Fareway to collect food for Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank

MASON CITY – Fareway is pleased to help refill the food pantry of the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank with our Thanksgiving in July event. During the month of July we will collect food and give that to the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank.

“I heard that the local food bank’s pantry was really low” commented Fareway store manager Darren Miculinlich. In heard that everything they collected from the Stamp Out Hunger collection in May has already been given away” Miculinlich observed. Earlier this year we got pretty acquainted with the local food bank when they did their Food Fun and Frank food sculpture in Southbridge Mall.

“We understand that with the kids out of school families are even more in need of the food now. Thanksgiving in July will help refill the food pantry at a time of year when donations usually are very small. Since Fareway is in the business of helping people buy groceries we felt this was something we should do to help our local and area families at this time” stated Miculinlich.

We checked with the food bank and found out that these items are in particularly low supply:

packages of jello or pudding
cans of peas
bars of soap
cans of potatoes
cans of tuna
jars of peanut butter
cans of apple or cherry pie filling
cake mixes
cake mix frosting
cans of diced or stewed tomatoes
cans of tomato sauce
bottles of salad dressing
boxes of crackers
boxes hamburger , chicken or tuna helper
boxes of 8.9 oz cheerios
cans of pears
cans of peaches
cans of fruit cocktail
boxes of dried potatoes
boxes of stuffing
boxes of jiffy mix
j
Individual are encouraged to help with their donations from any of those really needed items
Miculinlich  added” Our Fareway store here in Mason City will also provide special case prices for any individuals, families, churches, non profit organizations , professional offices or businesses that might wish to make a larger purchase”.

A spokesperson for the food bank said that the food bank has been serving approximately 30% more people this year in the first six months of the year than during that same period a year ago. That’s more than eleven hundred people that are getting emergency food. During a typically month the food bank will give out anywhere from eighteen to twenty thousand pounds of items. Each order has to supply the basic for three days meals plus bar soap and toilet paper.
